MERCERSBURG, Pa. — The president of the Tuscarora School Board walked out of Monday night’s meeting after a vote to approve a laptop lease for students failed to pass.
Clifford Smith left his seat and walked out of the James Buchanan High School library after the vote to lease laptops from Apple failed on a 4-4 vote.
“I hereby resign my position as president of the school board. I am not going to sit here and watch this school district go backwards,” Smith said.
The lease was for $73,089.05 per year for three years.
Voting against the lease were Dan Reeder, Donnie Piper, Tom Black and Erich Hawbaker. Voting for the lease were Smith, Daryl Hunsberger, Harold Hunsberger and Larry Funk.
“This is not about today, this is about the future,” Smith said during the discussion.
Board Vice President Larry Funk continued the meeting after Smith left the room.
