BUNKER HILL, W.Va. — A man was killed Thursday afternoon on Interstate 81 when the car he was driving collided with a tandem FedEx tractor-trailer while both vehicles were northbound, Berkeley County Sheriff Kenny Lemaster said.
Lemaster said Thursday night he could not release the name of the man who was killed, because officers were still trying to locate his family members.
The car had heavy front-end damage after the wreck, which occurred between the first mile marker and a rest area north of the Virginia line, Lemaster said.
The truck had a dual trailer, and one of the trailers fell on its side in the crash, Lemaster said.
The northbound lanes of the interstate were closed from about 2 to 4:30 p.m. while emergency crews worked at the scene, Lemaster said.
The southbound lanes were closed at one point to allow a helicopter to land, Lemaster said.
Lemaster said he did not know who was at fault in the crash.
A teenager in the car was taken to Winchester (Va.) Medical Center, and a woman in the car was flown to a hospital, although Lemaster said he did not know which facility.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not hurt, Lemaster said.
