BOONSBORO — Morgan Laing threw a four-hitter with nine strikeouts to lead Brunswick to a 4-1 victory over Boonsboro in an MVAL Antietam softball game on Wednesday.

“Morgan had an inner ear infection yesterday and she came back today to pitch a very good ballgame,” Brunswick coach Shannon Hogeback said. “We talked about getting up, so we could let our pitcher relax and pitch. We talked about coming out and getting a couple of runs.”

That was exactly what the Railroaders (3-3, 2-1) did, scoring twice in the top of the first inning.

Laing led off the game with a single to center and moved to third on a pair of wild pitches. Brandy Stone reached on a two-out popup that dropped around second base for an infield single that brought home Laing. Becca Beachley ripped a double to left to drive in Stone.

Brunswick added a run in the third to extend the lead to 3-0. Ashley Smith singled with two outs and moved to second on the same play on an outfield error. Smith scored from second when Stone reached on a dropped popup.

Beachley led off the fourth with a double to left, stole third and scored on a groundout to second by Destiny Powers.

Boonsboro (3-3, 1-2) scored its only run in the bottom of the fourth to reduce the deficit to 4-1. With one out, Haley Payne smacked a triple to left. One out later, Amber Myers singled to left to drive in Payne, who finished with two hits.
