Still no contract in Waynesboro Area School district

April 06, 2011

WAYNESBORO, Pa. — By ratifying a teachers contract, Chambersburg Area School District leaves only one Franklin County, Pa., school district left without a current contract.

The Waynesboro Area School Board and its teachers union, the Waynesboro Area Education Association, have been negotiating since early 2010. The board's contract with the teachers expired at the end of the 2009-10 fiscal year.

The next bargaining session is scheduled for Wednesday, April 13, both sides said after their last session in late March.

Waynesboro, Chambersburg and Shippensburg districts entered into negotiations around the same time. Shippensburg reached an agreement a few months ago.

The teacher contract issue has created some tense moments during school board meetings in recent months. Some taxpayers ask for fiscal restraint, while teachers ask for a "fair contract" during public comment sessions.

Some board members have engaged in debate with teachers during those public comment periods.

The WAEA includes about 307 members, union officials said in December.
