Chicken barbecue

Smithsburg Volunteer Fire Co. will hold a chicken barbecue Saturday from 11 a.m. until sold out. The event will be held at Debbie's Soft Serve on Md. 64.


Tickets cost $6 for dinner, which includes one-half chicken, baked beans and coleslaw. For a half a chicken only, the cost is $5.

Easter egg hunt

Welty Church of the Brethren, at 13465 Greensburg Road, will hold an Easter egg hunt Saturday, April 16, from 1 to 3 p.m.

The event is for elementary school-age children, and younger children with accompanying adult.

Little Sluggers


Smithsburg Little Sluggers will hold opening day ceremonies Saturday, starting at 9 a.m., followed by games. For more information, go to slsbaseball.org.

Children's choir to sing

The children and youth at Covenant Presbyterian Church will sing on Palm Sunday, April 17, during the 10 a.m. service under the direction of Barb Biser. Helpers include Emily Simmons and Alex Bakuaya. The children are Ameka, Sirri, Yemeli and Che Akaya; Anderson and Jackson Sindaco; Harry, Loic, Faith and Precious Foncham; Kaya, Joshua and Noah Hegbe; Ethan Potts; Allison Trumble; and MacKenzie Slough. The community is invited.

On Thursday, April 21, at 6:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall, the church invites the community to a re-enactment of the Last Supper meal Jesus had with his disciples. The group will eat a light meal of soup and bread, celebrate communion and participate in a footwashing ceremony all seated at table.

The church is at 11833 Greenhill Drive (off Jefferson Boulevard between Eastern Boulevard and Robinwood Drive.)

Cascade Elementary  

Cascade Elementary School thanks everyone who submitted Box Tops for this year's competition. The school raised $775. Congratulations to Mrs. Mentzer's class which raised $135 and won the cupcake party.

Smithsburg Middle

A concert sponsored by the Smithsburg Middle School music department to benefit Japan disaster relief is planned Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Smithsburg High School auditorium. The concert will feature music by the eighth-grade band, eighth-grade chorus, and the seventh- and eighth-grade orchestra.

Donations will be accepted at the door. Checks can also be mailed to Smithsburg Middle School. Make checks payable to the American Red Cross.

Spaghetti dinner

Christ Reformed United Church of Christ will hold an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m.

The menu includes spaghetti, garlic bread, salad, dessert and drink. Tickets cost $7 for adults, $5 for those ages 6 to 12 and are free for those 5 and younger. Carryout will be available.
