Leopards go deep to beat Cougars

PREP SOFTBALL

THURMONT, Md. — Jessica Hartman’s two-run home run pulled Smithsburg into a 3-3 tie in the fourth inning, and Danielle Beaver followed with a solo shot for the lead as the Leopards beat Catoctin 6-4 on Monday in the MVAL Antietam.

Beaver finished with two hits and two RBIs for Smithsburg (4-1, 2-0), while Shayla Murray and Sam Gladhill each had three hits. Cara Ferguson got the win in the circle to improve to 3-1.

Catoctin falls to 2-1, 1-1.

Amber Forrest struck out 12 and walked five for the Blazers (2-2, 0-2). Sara Elwood, Jose Stotler and Jenna Knable each had two hits.

HUSTONTOWN, Pa. — Marley Elbin pitched a three-inning no-hitter with six strikeouts and had two hits and four RBIs to lead the Indians in a rout.

Kayla Wertz and Taylor Morton each had three hits, while Callie Horton, Maddie Mellott and Bailey Elbin each added two hits for Southern Fulton (1-1). Mellott and Morton each had three RBIs, Horton and Bailey Elbin each drove in two and Wertz added an RBI.

CLEAR SPRING — Collin Nusbaum hit two home runs and Eric Omdahl added another as Brunswick (3-1, 2-1) outslugged Clear Spring in an MVAL Antietam contest.

Logan Appel hit a two-run homer for the Blazers (2-2, 0-2). Nick Hill had three hits and Tyler Walling added two hits.

THURMONT, Md. — Catoctin (3-0, 2-0) pounded out 14 hits and scored at least two runs in five of its six at-bats to beat Smithsburg in the MVAL Antietam.

Ryne Willard went 2-for-2 with a solo home run for the Leopards (3-1, 1-1). J.R. Rinehart also homered and Aaron Dinterman added an RBI single.

Broadfording 17, Highland View 4

Donnie Fritz had two hits and three RBIs to lead Broadfording to a five-inning victory over Highland View.

Broadfording (2-2) scored six runs in the first and nine in the third to take control. Colin Stahl had two hits and two RBIs, while Trevor Snodderly, Joe Garrish and Andrew Wyand had two hits each.

Broadfording used five pitchers, one in each inning.

Highland View scored four runs on one hit in the third. Brad Thomas had the Eagles’ only hit.

Jefferson 9, James Wood 0

WINCHESTER, Va. — Chris Payne tossed a no-hitter to lead the unbeaten Cougars past James Wood.

Payne walked one, hit two batters and struck out six as he picked up his fourth win and lowered his earned run average to 0.45.

Jefferson (10-0) scored one run in each of the first three innings and added five in the fourth.

Cody Johnson hit a home run for the Cougars and Logan Johnson led a 14-hit attack with three hits.

Martinsburg 12, Millbrook 5

WINCHESTER, Va. — Zach Stolipher had a game for the ages at the plate as he turned into a one-man wrecking crew.

Stolipher went 5-for-5, driving in six runs for the unbeaten Bulldogs (9-0). All of his hits were singles as Martinsburg pounded out 18 hits for the game.

STEPHENS CITY, Va. — Musselman tied the game at 6 in the top of the seventh, but Sherando scored the winning run in the bottom half.

Brad Shade had two hits, including a double, and drove in two for the Applemen. Tylor Baker had two hits, including a double, and drove in a run, and Darrin Zombro added two hits and an RBI.

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — Cole Warrenfeltz’s two-run home run in the fifth inning gave the Indians the lead on the way to a victory over Shippensburg.

Warrenfeltz also set up the first run for Waynesboro (1-2), tripling in the third inning. He scored on John Barr’s single.

Matt Gembe added two hits and Grant Bailey struck out seven for the Indians.

ST. JAMES — Andrew Ludwick scored three goals and Jamie Peterson added two goals and an assist as Saint James edged St. John’s Catholic Prep.

Leighton Younger and Ryan Doyle each had a goal and an assist for the Saints (3-2). Ben Louderback had an assist, Tommy Wagner made 14 saves and Avery Wilmore gained possession of 12 ground balls.
