Hubs strike early, shut out Warriors

HAGERSTOWN — The North Hagerstown softball team scored all five of its runs in the first two innings and got a five-hit shutout from sophomore pitcher Rachel Thomas — who was backed by errorless defense — for a 5-0 win over Boonsboro in an MVAL Antietam game.

“I think we played a great solid defensive game today,” Hubs coach Amanda Fleming said. “Defensively, we can’t ask for more solid games. Rachel did some good work for us today. I think she stayed focused. She did a great job and she didn’t fall behind any batters.”

Thomas retired 10 straight Warriors in one stretch from the second to fifth innings.

“I believe I threw my pitches well,” Thomas said. “I was working my pitches all over the strike zone, high and low. I feel like it paid off. I kept them off-balance. Our defense was behind me and I am proud of them for that.”

North (2-2, 2-0) scored twice in the first inning against Boonsboro (3-2, 1-1). Danielle Wissinger led off with a single to center and Shanan Plunkett was hit by a pitch. After a double steal, Allysen Breeden walked to load the bases before Faith Ricker’s two-run double to left.

The Hubs added three more runs in the second. With one out, Wissinger singled to right and Plunkett was once again hit by a pitch. Breeden followed with a single to right to knock in Wissinger and send Plunkett to third. Plunkett came home on a wild pitch, and Breeden advanced all the way to third on a throwing error on the play. Breeden scored on a passed ball.

Ricker and Wissinger each had two hits for the Hubs.

“Offensively, we had some scattered hits and we found some ways to get on base,” Fleming said. “We’re still waiting for our offense to break out and have a big game. We are capable of having more offense than we are showing.”

Amber Myers pitched three scoreless innings of relief for the Warriors.

“We obviously started out slow in the beginning,” Boonsboro coach Traci Humphreys said. “When we were hitting it, we were hitting it to people. The hits just weren’t falling in. Their pitcher was decent and accurate. She threw a very good ballgame.”
