Patient Hubs wait way to shutout win

HAGERSTOWN — Almost everyone has been told at some time that patience is a virtue.

The North Hagerstown baseball team exhibited the patience of a saint on Monday, drawing 11 walks from Boonsboro en route to a 10-0 MVAL Antietam victory, shortened to fifth innings by the 10-run rule.

The Hubs (2-1-1, 2-0) barely needed to swing the bat as they collected just six hits as Boonsboro’s pitchers struggled to find the strike zone. Starter Brittan Beard lasted 2 1/3 innings, giving up four runs and five walks.

Reliever Jarret Blickenstaff had a similar line, allowing four runs and four walks in 2/3 of an inning. Casey Strunk came in and curtailed the bleeding by only allowing two runs, but by then the damage was done.

“I’m glad we were patient, but we’ve got to score more runs with 11 walks,” said North Hagerstown coach Steve Myers.

Leadoff batter Ty Benson led North Hagerstown with two hits and three runs scored, while Jake Bachtell and Aaron Stoner drove in three runs each. All of the Hubs’ runs were scored by the top five hitters in their lineup.

“The top of our lineup is where all of our production was, which is good, since the top of our order hasn’t been getting many hits recently,” said Myers.

On the flip side, the Warriors (1-4, 0-3) were barely on base. North’s Ben Bushong pitched a complete game, allowing three hits with five strikeouts and one walk. No Boonsboro runner made it past second base.

“Those walks are going to kill you no doubt, but they were patient at the plate and we weren’t,” said Boonsboro coach Ben Leonard.

Despite the lack of production, Leonard was pleased to see Boonsboro’s defense come around. The Warriors were able to turn two double plays and they only recorded one error.

“This was our best defensive game of the season,” said Leonard. “Our defense has been our crutch, so it’s good to see our guys making plays. Now it’s time to swing the bat a little better.”
