John Irvin Gordon, 70, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Sunday, April 3, 2011, at Winchester (Va.) Medical Center.

Born Aug. 8, 1940, in Hancock, Md., he was the son of the late Irvin William and Ella May Miller Gordon.

He was a member of Berkeley Springs Church of Christ.

He was a 1958 graduate of Hancock High School and retired after 30 years of service as an assembler with Mack Trucks in Hagerstown, Md.

John served with the U.S. Army from Nov. 10, 1958, until his honorable discharge on Feb. 19, 1962.

He was a member of Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post 60 in Berkeley Springs. He was a fireman with the Berkeley Springs Volunteer Fire Co., and served as chief in 1975, 1977 and 1978.

Surviving are one daughter, Tera Lyn Gordon of Berkeley Springs; one grandson, Ridge Rockwell Gordon of Berkeley Springs; one sister, Carol Robinson of Mercersburg, Pa.; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Bonnie Josephine Younker Gordon, on Feb. 25, 2010; four sisters, Rosalie Everts, Barbara Smith, Lenora Neuhouser and Florence Ridenour; and four brothers, William Gordon, Clarence “Bud” Gordon, Carl Gordon and Lester Gordon.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, 2011, at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union St., Berkeley Springs, with Douglas Petty officiating. Interment will be at Stonebridge Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Hancock.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, which will be open from 2 to 8 p.m. for the convenience of family and friends.
