Robert Potter Molten III, 94, of Ringgold Pike, Hagerstown, Md., passed away peacefully March 29, 2011, at his home.

Born July 3, 1916, in Jacksonville, Fla., he was the son of the late U.S. Navy Capt. Robert Potter Molten Jr. and Elizabeth Gibbs (Wylly) Molten.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years, Marion Elizabeth (Stevens) Molten; and his brother, Richard Wylly Molten.

He is survived by his most loving companion and best friend, Rose Autenrieth; daughter, Patricia Molten Powell and husband, Samuel; sons, Robert Potter Molten IV and wife, Barbara, and Curtis Gregory Molten and wife, Bridget; sister, Lalor Molten Earle; good friends, Peter and Kathy Newkirk; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the South Pacific during World War II.

He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1938 with a degree in mechanical engineering, proud and happy to have placed in the top 100 percent  of his class. His working life found him engaged in heavy construction and machine design.

A memorial lunch reception will be held Saturday, May 7, 2011, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Women’s Club, 31 S. Prospect St., Hagerstown, MD 21740. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742 or to the charity of one’s choice.
