BALTIMORE — A team from Northern Middle School finished highest among nine local teams of Washington County elementary and middle school students competing Saturday in the 2011 Maryland Destination ImagiNation tournament.

Northern Middle School’s Whale of a Tale placed ninth among 21 teams in the Triple Take Road Show competition, with the St. Mary Dog Pound team placing 18th, said Dan Henderson, the Western Maryland regional director for Destination ImagiNation.

“It’s a global competition that fosters teamwork, innovation and creativity,” Henderson said of Destination ImagiNation.

Teams compete in various unorthodox competitions to test those skills, he said.

Part of the Triple Take Road Show included a “theatrical challenge” in which teams had to convey a story using three different methods, he said.

In the elementary competition, students on the Emma K. Doub Awesome Baconators placed 14th among 21 teams. The Lincolnshire Elementary Mythical Migraine Makers finished 12th among 19 teams in the Mythology Mission category.

In the Verses! Foiled Again! competition for middle school teams, the St. Mary Flibbertiggibits placed 17th among 21 teams. The Emma K. Doub Dell Huskies finished 19th among 20 teams in the elementary division.

In the category of Unidentified Moving Objects, the Emma K. Doub Challengers ranked 16th of 18 teams.

In ProjectOutreach: Dynamic Networks, the Paws 4 a Cause team from Northern Middle School achieved a rating of good, Henderson said.
