HAGERSTOWN — Beef ’ O’ Brady’s sports pub in Hagerstown has closed.

The franchise, owned by Watters Family Enterprise Inc., closed early this week, company spokesman Patrick Roach said.

Roach, with Fishman Public Relations of Illinois, said he was not provided with an exact date for the closure from the corporation, headquartered in Tampa Bay, Fla.

With the Hagerstown restaurant at 18727 North Pointe Drive no longer in business, the nearest Beef ’O’ Brady’s listed on the corporation website,, is in Frederick, Md.

Neither the company nor the property owner, Bowman Development Corp. of Williamsport, would officially comment on the status of the Hagerstown franchise last week.

But on Friday, the tell-tale-signs of closure were evident at the restaurant. During what normally would have been the lunch rush, those who showed up to dine at the restaurant found chairs turned upside-down on tables, a dimmed neon “open” sign and a locked front door.

The restaurant’s phone number had been disconnected. A representative of Columbia Gas came to turn off the gas service, and a man, who declined to talk about the restaurant, walked through the interior making notes on a clipboard.

According to a March 4 news release on the corporation website, there are 220 franchises in 21 states, and the corporation expects to open between 15 and 20 more in 2011.

Dreamed up by a couple in Brandon, Fla., in 1985, the restaurant chain — known as “Beef’s” to regulars — was designed to be “a neighborhood pub where friends and family could gather to enjoy good food and sports in a fun, comfortable atmosphere,” according to the website.
