HAGERSTOWN — The North Hagerstown Hubs came back from a 4-1 deficit by scoring eight runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to defeat the Clear Spring Blazers 9-4 on Monday in an MVAL Antietam baseball game.

Charles Cvijanovich started the one-out rally for the Hubs with a single to left and then stole second. One out later, Cvijanovich scored from second when Aaron Stoner made it all the way to second base on a throwing error. Jake Bachtell followed with a single and Stoner came home on the play on an outfield error. After Bachtell stole second, Alex Courtney walked. C.J. Owings singled to center to knock in Bachtell.

After Brady Wink walked to load the bases, Matt Daley delivered a two-run single to center. Ty Benson singled to center to knock in Wink. Cvijanovich then came through with his second hit of the inning by ripping a two-run double to right to drive in Daley and Benson. Andrew Yacyk became the ninth straight Hub to reach base when he singled to left to move the runner to third. But the Blazers then got the third out to end the inning.

“It was a tough game for the most part,” North coach Steve Myers said. “We capitalized on the big inning and we held them from there. We have been preaching about having a philosophy at the plate and having patience. We finally did that today. We didn’t give up. We fought hard after we gave up a few home runs.”

Cvijanovich and Yacyk had three hits each for North (1-1-1, 1-0), the defending Maryland Class 2A state champ. Eight of the nine players in the Hubs’ starting batting order hit safely.

“Everything fell into place,” Cvijanovich said. “We hit the ball hard and we were able to find the holes. I still think we have got the same potential as last year. We know what needs to be done.”

Hubs starting pitcher J.T. Root struck out eight in six innings to get the win. Bachtell pitched a scoreless inning of relief in the top of the seventh for the Hubs.

North took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a two-out rally when Yacyk, Stoner and Bachtell hit three consecutive singles.

Clear Spring tied the score at 1-1 with a run in the third when Brent Mentzer drew a one-out walk and scored, one out later, on a double to center by Dylan Stouffer.

Kyle Frank led off the fourth with a solo homer to center to put Clear Spring up 2-1.

The Blazers got back-to-back solo homers by Logan Appel and Stouffer with two outs in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 4-1.

“I thought North did a good job by putting up a big inning after we scored,” Clear Spring coach Mark Shives said. “They rallied after we did. I thought the eight-run inning was a big inning. They put the ball in play and that is what you have got to do in high school baseball. They are a veteran ballclub and they don’t quit. That was obvious today.”
