Leopards rally to beat Brunswick

PREP BASEBALL

SMITHSBURG — Smithsburg rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Brunswick 11-10 in the MVAL Antietam Conference opener for both teams Monday.

Ryne Willard’s two-run double tied the game at 10-all and Dylan Eyler delivered a game-winning double.

Brock Heiston had three singles and a home run to lead Smithsburg’s 13-hit attack. Willard had two singles and a double and J.R. Rinehart threw 4 2/3 innings of relief with eight strikeouts to pick up the win.

FREDERICK, Md. — St. Maria Goretti grabbed an early 1-0 lead but was overtaken by a six-run third inning in a loss to St. John’s Catholic Prep in an Independent Private School League contest.

Connor Grimsley, Jake Moats and Kevin Proctor had two hits each for the Gaels (1-5, 1-1).

Jefferson 11, Sherando 1

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. — Tanner Everton tossed a five-hitter over five innings as unbeaten Jefferson won its sixth game.

Everton struck out six and also aided his own cause with two of Jefferson’s nine hits. John Jones had two hits, including a home run.

Musselman 21, Handley 11

INWOOD, W.Va. — Musselman exploded for 15 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally from an 11-6 deficit.

Eight of the runs were unearned as the Applemen (2-3) did all the damage with one out.

Tylor Baker had three hits and five RBIs, Evan Woolum had three hits and four RBIs and Shea LaRose had three hits for Musselman (2-3), which banged out 17 hits.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — Andrew Byers drove home Kyle Patterson with the winning run in the bottom of the sixth to lead Chambersburg to a season-opening win over Carlisle.

SMITHSBURG — Shayla Murray had three of Smithsburg’s 14 hits and Cara Ferguson pitched a four-hit shutout as the Leopards opened MVAL Antietam play with a victory over Brunswick.

Dani Hudson had two hits and three RBIs for Smithsburg (3-1, 1-0), while Sam Gladhill had two hits and two RBIs, Kinsey Shifflett had two hits and Karah Knight had three RBIs.

WAYNESBORO, Pa. — Waynesboro’s Brittany Fahrney hit a three-run home run to tie the game in the seventh inning, but Northern scored the game-winner in the top of the ninth to beat the Maidens.

Fahrney had four hits, scored three runs and had four RBIs for Waynesboro (0-1). Erin Lisko had four hits, while Delaney Blubaugh and Hannah Zimmerman had two hits each for Waynesboro.

Boonsboro girls win Fraser Relays

MIDDLETOWN, Md. — Boonsboro won the girls team title at the Fraser Relays with 89 points, while Williamsport finished second in the nine-team field with 74.

The Boonsboro girls took first place in seven of the 13 relay events, winning the 4x100 (53.89), 4x200 (1:51.48), 4x400 (4:22.14), the sprint medley (4:38.24), pole vault (15-6), shot put (63-10 1/4) and discus (63-10 1/4).

The Williamsport girls won the 4x55 hurdles (40.62) and the high jump (15-6).

In boys action, Williamsport finished third and Boonsboro was eighth. The short-handed Warriors won the 4x400 (3:34.44).

CYCLING

Spinnler 11th at Union Grove

EAST EARL, Pa. — Mike Spinnler, 52, of Hagerstown, placed 11th in a field of 35 at the Union Grove Classic Road Race on Saturday.

Spinnler, who competes for AVC/Team Hagerstown-Washington County Tourism, covered the 32 1/2 miles in 1 hour, 32 minutes, 52 seconds. He missed a top-10 finish by less than a second.

The race was won by Christopher Meacham in 1:32:36.
