Jean Elizabeth (Baish) Toms, 81, passed away at Meritus Medical Center on Saturday March 26, 2011.

Born Feb. 21, 1930, in Carlisle, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Helen and Earl Baish.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, H. Lehman Toms, of Boonsboro, Md.  

She was a 1947 graduate of Carlisle High School in Carlisle, Pa., and graduated from Washington County Hospital School of Nursing in 1950.

Jean was employed as a registered nurse at the Washington County Hospital Emergency Room and Express Care, retiring in 1999.  

Jean belonged to Trinity Lutheran Church all of her married life and actively participated in Trinity’s Senior Ministry, coffee hour, parish nursing, Maryland Council for the Blind and infant nursery.

Jean was an active member of Hagerstown Lioness Club for 30 years, caring and sharing committee; Women’s Club; Retired Nurses; Republican Club; Boonsboro and Hagerstown Historical Society. In previous years, Jean was very active in the Boonsboro School PTAs, serving as president; Cub Scouts den mother; Boonsboro Band Boosters; Benevola 4-H Club; Women’s Farm Bureau; Chapelwood Garden Club; and the bloodmobile.

Jean loved to entertain, play cards and send greeting cards to friends. She enjoyed the beach and attended Hagerstown community concerts.

Jean is survived by two sons, Rick Toms and his wife, Cinda, of Hagerstown, and Greg Toms of Boonsboro; two daughters, Sally Hellane of Hagerstown and Susan J. Toms of Hagerstown; grandchildren, April Toms Meadows of Richlands, N.C., Erin L. Toms of Kaneoke, Hawaii, Brenton and Kelly Toms of Hagerstown, Hilary Hellane of Hagerstown, and Preston Toms of Boonsboro; one great-grandson, Wyatt Meadows; and sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Dale Noggle of Carlisle, Pa.

In addition to her husband and parents, Jean was preceded in death by her two brothers, E. Richard Baish and R. Robert Baish.

The family will receive friends at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, on Tuesday, March 29, 2011, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.

A service of Christian burial will be Wednesday, March 30, at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 15 Randolph Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Eric A. Norgard officiating. A reception at the church will follow the service. Interment will be at the Rest Haven Cemetery following the reception.
