Gael Center hopping with all-stars

HAGERSTOWN — The Hagerstown Junior Basketball League held its annual All-Star Saturday — a tripleheader of all-star games — inside the Gael Center at St. Maria Goretti High School.

In the Junior Division “A” Game, Ameka Akaya and Corey Crosby scored 14 points each and Riley Lazich added 10 to lead the Red Team to a 74-67 win over the Blue Team.

Elijah Stubbs and Nick Steiner finished with 14 points each, while Justin Smith tallied 13 points for the Blue Team.

“The key to the victory was that the fact that we were able to sustain the defensive pressure,” Red Team coach Adam Carter said. “Defense made all the difference in the win. They were a well-coached team.”

Carter also said he was pleased with his team’s offense.

“We were fortunate that our guys were able to keep attacking the basket,” he said. “We were able to limit our turnovers against their press. When it counted, our kids stepped up. I’m happy for the kids that they were able to complete their junior league experience on a positive note.”

The Blue Team rallied back from a 54-44 deficit, cutting the Red Team’s lead down to 64-63 with 2:36 remaining in the fourth quarter. But the Red Team answered, closing the game on a 10-4 run.

In the Elementary Division Game, the Blue Team got past the Red Team 54-49.

Myles Nicholson had 14 points, while Alfonso White and Corban Luna added 12 points each for the Blue Team.

Mark Koontz, Dominic Smith and Jeffrey Wetzell led the Red Team with 10 points apiece.

“I thought the kids played well,” Blue Team Coach Mike Murray said. “An all-star game is hard, because you are subbing kids in and out. It takes you out of the flow.”

The Blue Team took control in the second half.

“The start of the second half was the key to the victory,” Murray said. “I mixed up the lineup a little bit. Myles Nicholson, Alfonso White and Corban Luna got some key baskets for us. Once we got up by 15 points, I knew it was going to be hard for the Red Team to come back. It was a fun game to play and a fun game to watch. All 12 of my kids played hard for every second that they were on the court.”

In the Junior Division “B” Game, the Blue Team defeated the Red Team 54-41.

Joseph Alexander scored 13 points and Matt Shipley added 12 for the Blue Team.

Justin Semler topped the Red Team with 11 points.

“I told them that they were all all-stars,” Blue Team coach Antoine Gantt said. “All they had to do is play with confidence. Our strategies were to pass the ball around, hit the open man and box out. All of them did those things quite well.”

Gantt said his players executed properly on both ends of the floor.

“We had our guards attack the basket,” he said. “That would open up our big men to score. Our defensive strategy was every time that we made a basket, then we would press. We did an excellent job with the press, especially Matt Shipley.”
