Richard Lee "Dickie" Montgomery Sr., 68, died March 25, 2011, at Meritus Medical Center, east of Hagerstown.

Born in Hagerstown, he was the son of Lillian and the late Virgil Montgomery. He was the loving husband of Judy Montgomery.

He was a 1961 graduate of North Hagerstown High School.

Dickie served proudly in the U.S. Navy. He worked at Mack Trucks as a machine operator for 39 years until he retired.

He attended church at The Good Shepherd Ministries in Hagerstown.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is also survived by his three children, Michael Wayne Montgomery, Richard Lee Montgomery Jr. and wife, Kelly Ann Montgomery, and Christa Lynn (Montgomery) Jacobson and husband, Allen Joseph Jacobson; one sister, Joni Lillian Ecton; six grandchildren; and various nieces and nephews all of Hagerstown.

Besides his family, his greatest love in life was men's softball. He started playing ball on the playground at the age of 10 and continued with the game until he was 63. During his 29 years in men's slow pitch, Dickie played, coached, umpired and helped with the ASA of Maryland. His teams played all over the United States, winning four national titles and various local and state tournaments.

Dickie was very proud of his accomplishments with his teams through the years, but what he loved most was the wonderful people he met through the years. To them, he will always be remembered by his nickname, "Line Drive."

In 2010, Dickie was inducted in the Maryland Slow Pitch Hall of Fame.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2011, at The Good Shepherd Ministries, 19763 Longmeadow Road, Hagerstown, with the Rev. Steven McCullough officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Friends will be received Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dickie's name in care of The Columbia Bank, 83 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, MD 21740.
