Alfred Smith James, 75, of Hagerstown, Md., died Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at Julia Manor Health Care Center in Hagerstown.

Born Aug. 25, 1935, in Williamsport, Md., he was the son of the late Francis Watkins and Hannah Ruth (Mentzer) James. He was the husband of the late Irene Elizabeth "Pee Wee" (Eichleberger) James, who died in 1988, and the late Colette Wible James, who died in 1999.

Alfred graduated from Williamsport High School and later entered the U.S. Navy. He served during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1962. He retired in 1995 from Beaver Mechanical Contractors in Hagerstown, where he was a draftsman for more than 30 years.

He was a member of St. Bernadette Parish in Severna Park, Md., and St. Augustine Catholic Church and American Legion Post 202, both of Williamsport.

Alfred is survived by a son, Jon D. James and wife, Crystal, of Sharpsburg, Md.; four daughters, Jennifer A. Carpenter and husband, Terry, Jacqueline A. Slusher, and JoAnne J. Miller and husband, Jason, all of Hagerstown, and Jessica J. Bittinger and husband, Tim, of Hanover, Md.; one daughter-in-law, Terri James; two brothers, John James of Williamsport and Francis James of Goldsboro, N.C.; one sister, Marie James of Williamsport; 16 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

In addition to wives and parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Jeffry A. James; one brother, Paul James; one sister, Ella M. Shain; and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. Monsignor Alfred E. Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

Military honors shall be accorded by AMVETS Post 10, Hagerstown, and the Bulldog Detachment for the Marine Corps League, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to American Diabetes Foundation, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312 or to American Cancer Society, 1037 Haven Road, Hagerstown, MD 21742.
