Grant to pay for sidewalks

March 25, 2011

Washington County has been awarded a grant to add sidewalks in the area of Lincolnshire Elementary School, county Public Works Director Joseph Kroboth III said.

The roughly $600,000 grant comes from the national Safe Routes to School program, said Kroboth, calling the improvements a "significant safety enhancement for the children who walk to school."

Sidewalks will run from U.S. 11 along Lincoln Avenue and Lincolnshire Road, and also along Oak Ridge Drive from Virginia Avenue to a back path leading to the school, he said.

Washington County Commissioner Ruth Anne Callaham congratulated the public works staff for seeking and winning the grant.

"Your efforts for safety for the kids are really appreciated," she said.
