Paul Lawrence Spruce Sr., 71, of Hagerstown, Md., died Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown.
Born Oct. 2, 1939, in Mallory, W.Va., he was the son of the late Elmore Spruce and Evelyn (Godfrey) Wright. He was the husband of 46 years to Vernice Rozella (Younker) Spruce.
Paul was a cook at the Red Horse and later retired as a machine operator from Mack Trucks.
In addition to his wife, Paul is survived by two sons, Fred D. Younker of Frederick and Paul L. Spruce Jr. of Hagerstown; three daughters, Cynthia L. Watkins and Charlene V. Spruce, both of Hagerstown, and Kimberly K. Smith of Baltimore; four brothers; six sisters; 16 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.
The funeral service will be noon Monday, March 28, 2011, at the Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, Hagerstown. The Rev. Nathan G. Bell will officiate. Burial will be in the Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.
The visitation will be 11 a.m. to noon Monday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Diabetes Foundation, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312.
The Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, Bryan K. Kenworthy P.A., 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown has been entrusted with the arrangements.
