It was no big surprise that Boonsboro was Washington County’s top boys indoor track and field team over the winter, winning its second straight county title and finishing a county-best third at the Maryland Class 1A state meet.

But the Boonsboro girls team?

There was no bigger surprise at the end of the season.

After finishing sixth at the MVAL Antietam meet, then fourth at the county championships and third in the West region, the Boonsboro girls placed a county-best second at states.

For having the county’s top two teams at the biggest meet of the season, Boonsboro’s Becky Walter is The Herald-Mail’s 2010-11 Washington County Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year.

“I was thrilled,” Walter said. “I knew the boys were going to be strong, but I still have a hard time believing how well the girls did at states. They just kept moving up. I knew second through sixth would be close at states, but I was not expecting second.”

Walter extended much of the credit to her assistant coaches — Shawn Cutsail, Sue Lowery, Sarah Harris and Dwight Scott.

“Nothing that was done could be accomplished with just me,” she said. “In our own way, we were all head coaches. We had every aspect of the team covered.”

The leadership instilled in Walter’s athletes also was key.

“We had a great group of upperclassmen that knew what needed to be done,” she said. “I feel comfortable in saying that if no coach was there, those kids would lead practice and everybody would do what they needed to do.”

Walter pointed them in the right direction from the get-go.

“I just try to motivate them from the start and let them know what they can accomplish,” she said. “I just make them realize they can do it so they push themselves and push everybody else as well.”
