Rafter hits walk-off home run to lift Wildcats to victory

WILLIAMSPORT — Sophomore Jasmine Rafter made a splash in her varsity debut, hitting a walk-off solo home run in the seventh inning to send the Wildcats to a season-opening 5-4 win over Manchester Valley on Tuesday.

Kayla Ewing hit two two-run home runs — one in the fourth, the other in the sixth — for Williamsport (1-1), which gave coach Jennie Finafrock her first victory.

Ariah Giles notched the win in the circle with seven strikeouts.

CLEAR SPRING — Blazers ace Amber Forrest pitched a shutout with five strikeouts against Francis Scott Key for her second straight win to start the season.

Haley Thorn paced the offense with two RBIs and Forrest and Tori Albert had two hits each for Clear Spring (2-0).

CLEAR SPRING — Logan Appel scored the winning run on a walk-off single by Kyle Franks as Clear Spring rallied past Francis Scott Key.

Dylan Stouffer had two hits, including a two-run homer, for the Blazers (2-0). Appel and Ryan Aaron had two hits each and Adam Mellott pitched an inning of relief in the seventh to pick up the win.

Kevin Grimm and Dillan Harbaugh had three goals each, Luke Slick had a goal and two assists, Travis Leopold had a goal, Chase Scott had an assist and Clayton Layman made six saves for the Leopards (1-0).

Thomas Johnson 16, North Hagerstown 5

FREDERICK, Md. — Zach Eppard led the Hubs with two goals and Brandon Brown had a goal and two assists in North’s season-opening loss to Thomas Johnson.

Bryan Wills added a goal and an assist, and Niklas Grahn rounded out the scoring for the Hubs (0-1). Brian Davis and Daved Paddack combined for five saves.

Frederick 10, South Hagerstown 1

FREDERICK, Md. — Warrens Remy scored the lone goal on an assist by Chris Quante for the Rebels in a season-opening loss to Frederick.

Drake Kessell had 16 saves the Rebels (0-1).

COLLEGE BASEBALL

HCC 2-4, Southern Maryland 0-6

LA PLATA, Md. — Colby Fisher pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings and Chris Kulik and Marcellus Sumlin drove in runs as Hagerstown Community College beat Southern Maryland in the first game of a doubleheader split.

Fisher (4-0) allowed three hits and two walks while striking out three, and Jay Shafer got two outs — one a strikeout — for his first save. Kulik had two hits and Sumlin hit an RBI single.

The Hawks (17-6, 4-3 Maryland JuCo) were hurt by Southern’s six-run second inning in the second game. Jordan Thurber had two hits and drove in a run, and Justin Martinez hit an RBI double.

COLLEGE TRACK

Hawks at Battleground Relays

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — Grant Smith, Elizabeth Ross and Samantha Taylor each won an event on Saturday at the University of Mary Washington.

Smith won the men’s shot put with a throw of 48 feet, 3 1/2 inches. Ross won the women’s shot put with a throw of 43-6 1/2, and Taylor won the women’s pole vault by clearing 9-6 1/4.

Paige Shirk finished second in the women’s shot put (41-4 1/2), Ginger Berry was second in the women’s pole vault (8 feet) and Kyle Toms took second in the men’s shot put (45-9). Toms was third in the javelin (139-9) and Samantha Ebersole took third in the women’s pole vault (7-6).

Smith was fourth in the men’s discus (124-6) and Wyatt Funk was fourth in the men’s high jump (5-8).

HCC’s men’s 4x200 relay team of Lance Lagos, Heisman Johnson, Chaz Nedd and Funk also took fourth (1:36.63).

Amber Elliot was fifth in the women’s 100 (13.64), and two other men’s relay teams took fifth — the distance medley team of Mike Salguero, Lagos, Nethanial Clark and Brandon Mauck (11:02.60) and the sprint medley team of Nedd, Lagos, Johnson and Evan Clark (3:46.06).

In the men’s 1,500, Salguero finished 10th (4:16.66) and Mauck was 14th (4:21.51).
