Mail Call - March 23

March 22, 2011

"I've lived in Hagerstown for 71 years. I was born here. I think the city and the county is gonna go broke. They’re in the real estate business, both of them. They had 1,200-and-some people move in here — there’s no jobs. Look around at all the empty buildings you got ... so I hope they pass bills, instead of passing bills that cost money, and quit buying real estate, so we don’t have to keep paying higher taxes.”
— Hagerstown

“If I’m not paying taxes for fire protection and police protection, exactly what am I paying taxes for? Certainly not to pay the salaries of ... legislators going down to Annapolis and saying we don’t need fire protection in the North End. The last two deaths in a fire occurred in the North End. We have to have a firehouse out here on the other side of the railroad tracks.”
— Hagerstown

“I was talking to a person the other day about bicycles on the road, that they should be facing traffic and all, which I have to maybe agree with that suggestion. But I said that the law is that bicycles have to stay to the right of the roadway. But that makes sense in a way, of bicyclists facing traffic. That way, bicyclists will know, can see the traffic, the motorists a lot better, because motorists come up behind bicycles and all.”
— Greencastle, Pa.

“When most of us purchase a new or newer car, we sell or trade our existing one. The County Commuter got a new fleet of buses, but a fleet of the older buses have been parked for months at the former Phoenix building behind the detention center. Guess they were put there to rust up where they’re not seen by many people.”
— Hagerstown

“I have a question for all you people that support the Environmental Protection Agency, which is nothing more than a bottomless money pit, and all you global warming advocates. If our environment is so bad and global warming has gotten so bad, you’ve never heard from one small business — compared to all the top corporations, that is — and that is the maple sugar business. If global warming is so bad, we would have no more maple sugar. ... Global warming’s being blamed for everything, but nobody’s looked at the small businesses that rely on cold weather.”
— Hagerstown

“I am so fed up with all these articles and all about how great our education system here in Washington County is. ... How is it that these records that come out that shows that we are doing so well, aren’t they just from tests? Tell me our teachers aren’t just going through — and especially from our other officials way up in the BOE — tell me they aren’t just getting ready for the test, but not really teaching them what they need to know.”
— Hagerstown

“I say hats off to Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker. We’ve been needing this for a long time in this country. The unions have pretty well bankrupted this country, demanding the high wages. I worked for a union for over 40 years, and I want to tell you, they never did anything for me. So again, hats off to Scott Walker. Keep up the good work. You other states need to follow suit.”
— Hagerstown

“I see in the paper where they’re gonna make some changes in Washington County, where they’re reconstructing where they can save some money. That’s good. This is on county commissioners. Then they, on another page it says county employees might not get salary increases. Well, they don’t need salary increases. There’s people out here in Washington County who don’t have jobs now.”
— Hagerstown

“We have a county deputy director of public works for land development engineering, a county director of permits and inspections, a deputy director of environmental management for water quality. Where does it all stop? Where is the money coming from to pay for all this?”
— Brightwood Acres

“I’m a state employee, and I found out yesterday that more taxes are coming off my check. You know, I was really surprised ... I’m just barely making it, you know. I live by myself, and I’m near retirement age, and a lot of health issues, and I just can’t afford any more coming off my check or I just won’t be able to even live, you know, just pay my bills.”
— Martinsburg, W.Va.

“Abraham Lincoln did not have a middle name. He was named after his paternal grandfather in Virginia, but he did not have a middle name.”
— Hagerstown

“I would like to ask a question. If somebody sends you a letter and says you’ve won something, do you have to pay a fee? I live on Brown Road here in ... Maryland, and I have several letters that say they want a fee, that I have won something.”
— Washington County

“County commissioners are putting it to the taxpayers again. Reducing the excise tax in the name of jobs? The jobs will be filled by people coming up the road each day, and the materials are delivered from down the road. Basically, the cookie-cutter builders do not hire and purchase locally. Furthermore, there’s an excess inventory of houses for sale in this county.”
— Hagerstown

“I read an article in the newspaper about college tuition, and I’ve seen the word ‘illegal.’ If they’re illegal students, why are they in this country?”
— Hagerstown
