WAYNESBORO, Pa. — A Mississippi man charged in a fatal car accident Thursday remained in Franklin County (Pa.) Jail without bail Tuesday, as the family and friends of the victim, Judithann Clement,  gathered for her funeral.

A preliminary hearing for David Michael Szumigala, 20, of Ocean Springs, Miss., was scheduled for Tuesday, March 29, in Franklin County Court. He faces 18 criminal counts, including homicide by vehicle and involuntary manslaughter.

Waynesboro and Washington Township, Pa., police said Szumigala fled from an officer at 120 mph. After the chase ended, Szumigala then hit Clement’s vehicle at the intersection of Grant and Main streets shortly after midnight, police said.

Clement, a 45-year-old mother of nine from Waynesboro, was flown to York (Pa.) Hospital and pronounced dead there several hours after the crash.

She was an active member of St. Andrew Catholic Church, where she taught eighth-grade Confraternity of Christian Doctrine classes, coordinated the youth group and served as a marriage mentor.

She was to be buried in St. Andrew Cemetery after a Mass of Christian Burial.
