HAGERSTOWN — Things did not go as well as North Hagerstown hoped on Monday.

As a result, the Hubs were defeated 9-4 in their softball season opener by the Century.

“The girls played well for our first game this season,” North Hagerstown coach Amanda Fleming said. “I don’t think that we had the offense that I had hoped to have. Century played a great game. They were solid defensively and they hit the ball really well today.”

North Hagerstown (0-1) got all four of its runs and seven of its eight hits in two innings, the first and the sixth.

Faith Ricker collected three hits for the Hubs.

Crista Giannaccini had three hits, including a solo home run, drove in three runs and scored three runs for Century (1-0). Mary Hartman added three RBIs to support winning pitcher Alyssa Dixon.

“We were looking for pitches that we could drive,” Century coach Jay Seaborg said. “We wanted to hit the ball hard somewhere. This was a good game.”

North Hagerstown got on the scoreboard first with one run in the bottom of the first. Danielle Wissinger led off with a single, followed by one-out singles by Allysen Breeden and Ricker to load the bases. Rachel Thomas was hit by a pitch with two outs to score Wissinger.

Century took the lead with three runs in the fourth inning for a 3-1 advantage.

With one out, Hartman doubled to start the rally. Steph Whealton reached on a fielder’s choice and advanced on a wild pitch.

Hartman scored on a single to left by Giannaccini and Whealton followed her home on an outfield error. Giannaccini scored on a sacrifice fly by Katie Pugh.

“It was a nice comeback,” Seaborg said. “It was starting to get kind of nerve-wracking. They are a pretty good team. You don’t want to get behind them and stay there. Once we got a couple of runs, it loosened us up a little bit. We have got good hitters. So, it is just a matter of everybody relaxing a little bit.”

Century extended its lead to 6-1 with two runs in the fifth on a two-run double by Hartman. It added a run in the sixth when Giannaccini homered to center.

The Hubs reduced the deficit to 6-4 by scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth on an outfield error and RBI singles by Amanda Fiery and Brittanie Harris.

The Knights put the Hubs away with three runs in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Hartman and RBI doubles by Giannaccini and Pugh.
