Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down - March 19

To the Washington County Free Library system, which is stepping up to help local residents find jobs. The library provides free Internet access and one-on-one help with the computer skills needed in the job search process. Last year, more than 50 people a month got help with job hunting at the library.



To North Hagerstown High School's competitive culinary team, which beat 18 other schools from across the state to win the Maryland ProStart Student Invitational in Baltimore. With the victory, the North High team advances to the National ProStart Invitational competition in Kansas.



To Ed Snyder, a professor of environmental studies at Shepherd University, who recently was named West Virginia Professor of the Year by the Faculty Merit Foundation of West Virginia. Snyder joined the Shepherd faculty in 1986 and led the effort to develop the school's environmental studies program.



Thumbs down



To stand-up comedian Gilbert Gottfried, who was fired last week as the voice of the Aflac duck. Gottfried made tasteless remarks on Twitter about Japan's disastrous 9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami, which killed thousands of people, with thousands more still missing and nearly half a million homeless.
