Hawks sweep doubleheader

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Chris Kulik had three hits and an RBI to lead Hagerstown Community College past Jefferson 12-4 in the first game of a doubleheader sweep.

Danny Morris had two hits and four RBIs, Seth Poffenberger had two hits and two RBIs and Josh Knupp added two hits for the Hawks (14-5).

In the nightcap, Knupp had two hits and three RBIs, and Justin Martinez and Kyle Crist had two hits and an RBI each in HCC’s 13-1 victory.

SALEM, Va. — Shepherd University won twice at the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament.

Courtni Williams went 3-for-5 with two doubles, and Amber Dudek went 3-for-5 with a two-run homer to pace the Rams (13-5) against East Stroudsburg. Nichole Pitcock and Tiffany Farmer added two hits each.

Pitcock (9-1) tossed a two-hitter against Lock Haven, striking out six and walking three. Williams and Chelsie Oals each went 2-for-4 and drove in a run.

HCC 5-9, Anne Arundel 4-1

ARNOLD, Md. — Brittany Larrick went 4 for 4 with four RBIs to lead HCC’s 12-hit attack in the second game of a season-opening doubleheader sweep of Anne Arundel on Thursday.

Larrick had two doubles and a home run and scored three times, Mallory Wishard had two hits and winning pitcher Megan Pomeroy homered for the Hawks.

In the first game, Wishard had two hits and two runs and Amanda Lizama drove in two runs for HCC (2-0, 2-0 Maryland JuCo).

COLLEGE GOLF

Weber takes third for HCC

ARNOLD, Md. — Hagerstown Community College’s Zach Weber shot an 80 on Thursday to finish third individually at a Maryland JuCo tournament hosted by Anne Arundel.

Jordan Wivell shot a 90 to finish tied for 11th for the Hawks.



MEN’S BASKETBALL

Mency makes all-region teams

Merrimack senior Dee Mency was selected to the Daktronics and NABC All-East Region first teams.

A unanimous selection to the Northeast-10 All-Conference first team earlier this season, Mency became the fifth player in Merrimack history to eclipse 2,000 career points. He finished his career with 2,039 points, third on the program’s all-time list, and averaged 20.5 points and 6.9 rebounds this season.

Mency is a Hagerstown native who was the 2006 Herald-Mail All-Area Player of the Year for North Hagerstown.

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. — Allison Sween and Brenna Haupt combined for a three-inning no-hitter as Hedgesville won its season opener over Handley.

Courtney Layhew hit a two-run homer and Danielle Parks added two hits for the Eagles (1-0).

RUNNING

Riford, Rubeling win Disney title

ORLANDO, Fla. — Mackenzie Riford, 17, and Maria Rubeling, 45, both of Hagerstown, recently won the Mother-Daughter Team Division at the Disney Princess Half Marathon with a combined time of 3 hours, 18 minutes, 39 seconds.

Riford covered the 13.1-mile course in 1:36:10, while Rubeling ran it in 1:42:29.

There were 241 mother-daughter teams.
