A fire that started in a bedroom in an apartment at 12809 Little Elliot Drive in Hagerstown sent one man to Meritus Medical Center Friday night to be treated for minor injuries, Hagerstown Battalion Fire Chief Justin Mayhue said.

Mayhue said firefighters were called to the fire at the Cortland Mansion apartments about 10:45 p.m.

Off-duty firefighters who lived in the apartment complex rushed to the fire in Apt. 12, Mayhue said.

When they arrived, firefighters discovered that one of the two tenants who lives in the apartment had thrown water on a burning mattress to douse the flames, he said.

Firefighters brought a partially charred mattress and boxsprings out of the building and sprayed them with water.

Mayhue said the fire was contained to the bedroom, and the apartment is still habitable.

The cause is still being investigated, he said.

The occupants of the building were evacuated for a short time while firefighters were in the building, he said. The scene was being cleared by 11:30 p.m.
