Rockland Woods Elementary School's Parent-Teacher Organization has donated $8,700 to the school to buy classroom magazines and science materials and to help pay for student field trips, said Jill Burkhart, Washington County Public Schools' director for elementary education.

The Washington County Board of Education unanimously approved accepting the gift during a business meeting Tuesday nigth at the central office off Commonwealth Avenue.

Board President Wayne Ridenour thanked the PTO for the donation.

A letter from Principal Kathy Stiles notes "Time" and "National Geographic" as examples of magazines the money would buy.

The PTO raised the money through various fundraisers since the school opened in 2008, said Marlene Powell, PTO co-president.

The fundraisers include monthly restaurant nights, selling pizza kits and an October student walkathon. Last year's walkathon raised $4,000 in one hour, she said.
