TV documentary on Irish Brigade airs tonight

March 16, 2011

Viewers in Hagerstown can see both episodes of “Fág an Bealach” on the Smithsonian Channel from 8 to 10 p.m. today.

Irish filmmakers Tile Films produced the documentary, shot in part in Washington County.

“Fág an Bealach” tells the story of the Irish Brigade, a decorated military unit which fought during the American Civil War.

“Faugh a ballagh!” means “Clear the way!” in old Gaelic. It was the battle cry of the Irish Brigade, which fought in Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania on the side of the Union.
