Laurie Ann (Salmon) Shinham, 50, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away Sunday, March 13, 2011, peacefully in her home after a courageous battle with breast cancer.

Born March 4, 1961, in Cumberland, Md., she was the daughter of Carole A. Hopkins and James Salmon.

Laurie graduated from Smithsburg High School and graduated cum laude with a master’s degree from University of Maryland School of Nursing. She did further graduate work at Frostburg University and Western Maryland College.

Laurie dedicated her life to caring for and serving others. She worked as a registered nurse at Washington County Hospital, Community Health Nurse II at Washington County Health Department, clinical nursing instructor at Hagerstown Junior College, nursing professor at Hagerstown Community College, camp nurse at Camp Joy-El in Greencastle, Pa., and was a residential nurse at Cedar Ridge Children’s Home.

Mrs. Shinham was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Theta Tau. She was an active member of the American Nurses Association. Over the years, she served with the Hagerstown Junior College Alumni Association Board of Directors as Student Development Chairperson, Washington County Council of PTA’s, Pangborn Elementary School PTA, and Family Life Advisory Committee for the Washington County Board of Education.

She was a member of Tri-State Fellowship and served as a middle school youth leader for 14 years. She was known by many by her servant’s heart and determined spirit. She enjoyed hosting family events and relaxing on the beach.

In addition to her parents, Laurie is survived by her husband of nearly 29 years, Donald Shinham; two daughters, Erica Shinham of Philadelphia, Pa., Sarah (Shinham) Sparks and her husband, Adam Sparks, of Upland, Ind.; one grandson; two sisters, Julie House and Beth Reyes of Hagerstown; many nieces and nephews; and her constant companion, Lily.

A memorial service will be held to celebrate Laurie’s life on Saturday, March 19, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Tri-State Fellowship, 13153 Cearfoss Pike, Hagerstown, MD  21740. Family will greet friends between 10 and 11 a.m. at the church and following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Laurie Shinham Memorial Fund at Tri-State Fellowship, 13153 Cearfoss Pike, Hagerstown, MD  21740.
