March 14, 2011

Frederick, Md. — A Baltimore man died after the truck he was driving west on Interstate 70 at Md. 75 crashed Monday morning, according to Maryland State Police.

Elmer Smith, 41, was taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead, state police said.

A malfunction in the front driver’s side tire caused Smith to lose control of a  westbound 1996 Peterbilt, state police said.

The truck rolled over, slid into a guardrail on the left shoulder and Smith was thrown from the truck, state police said.

Frederick County’s 911 center started getting calls about the crash shortly after 11:11 a.m., state police said.

Police said Smith was not wearing his seat belt.
