Samuel O’Neal Haines, 71, of Hagerstown, died Saturday, March 12, 2011, at Meritus Medical Center, Hagerstown, Md.

Born Aug. 26, 1939, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., he was the son of the late Leonard French Haines and Mary Irene (Miller) Haines Wessinger.

He was the fiancé of Constance Younker of Hagerstown.

Sam was a welder for Grove Manufacturing, Shady Grove, Pa., for more than 35 years.

In addition to his fiancé, Sam is survived by his first wife, Betty Lou (Saunders) Haines Middlekauff of Clear Spring, Md.; two sons, Karl L. Haines and Patrick O. Haines, both of Hagerstown; four daughters, Karen A. Grimes of Hancock, Md., and Linda L. Wallech, Debra L. Jones and Melissa J. Loveless, all of Hagerstown; a half brother; a half sister; his stepfather, Wilbur Wessinger of Big Pool, Md.; 30 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Neal E. Haines and Donald L. Haines; and four sisters, Virginia Dyke, Carol Mills, Mary P. Young and Debora L. Marville.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 17, 2011, at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, Hagerstown. The Rev. Richard B. Haberkorn will officiate. Burial will be in Parkhead Cemetery, Big Pool.

The visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at the funeral home.   

The family suggests memorial contributions may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association, 5 Public Square, Hagerstown, MD 21740; or to the American Parkinson Disease Association, National Office, 135 Parkinson Ave., Staten Island, NY 10305.

Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, Bryan K. Kenworthy P.A., 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown, has been entrusted with the arrangements.
