SMITHSBURG — Andy Darryl Mapes, 62, of Smithsburg, Md., passed away Friday, March 11, 2011, at his residence.

Born Jan. 13, 1949, in Muskegon, Mich., he was the son of the late Donald L. Mapes and Marian Mapes Slayman. He was also preceded in death by his stepfather, Edward Slayman; and brother, John F. Mapes.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Jean Arnold Mapes; sons, Erik Mapes and wife, Michelle, and Scott Mapes and wife, Afton. He also is survived by his grandchildren, Mikayla, Haley and Chase Mapes; brother, Bill Mapes and wife, Mary; sister, Chris Ott; sister-in-law, Barbara Devenport; and numerous nieces and nephews. Andy retired after 30 years with Mack Trucks Inc., as an emissions lab technician. He served 20 years in the U.S. Coast Guard and the 129th Signal Battalion of the Maryland Army National Guard, from which he retired as sergeant 1st class.

He served as a past post commander of Dixon-Troxell American Legion Post 211, was active in the 29th Division Association Lantern Post 729, AMVETS Post 10, Vietnam Era Last Man's Club, BPOE Lodge 378, Boy Scouts of America Troop 62 and Valley Little League.

The family will receive friends at Davis Funeral Home, 12525 Bradbury Ave., Smithsburg, Tuesday, March 15, from 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be Wednesday, March 16, at 10 a.m. at Davis Funeral Home. Burial service with military honors will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Chapel Cemetery, Gamber, Md.
