SHARPSBURG — Garvin Wayne "Chicken" Burgan Sr., 74, of 3831 Harpers Ferry Road, Sharpsburg, Md., went to be with his Lord and Savior surrounded by his family at Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown, Md., on Friday, March 11, 2011.
He was born April 30, 1936, in Antietam, Md., to the late Otho L. and Hattie V. McCoy Burgan.
He was preceded in death in January of 2011 by his wife, Connie Jean Burgan, to whom he was married for 53 years.
He was employed by Antietam Battlefield, where he was known to his co-workers as "Burgie" until retiring in 1995. After his retirement, he was employed by the Battleview Market in Sharpsburg.
He was a member of New Life Fellowship, Dargan, Md.
He was a loving, devoted husband, father and grandfather. He loved the outdoors, fishing and hunting and was a diehard Boston Red Sox fan. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren. His family was his pride and joy.
Survivors Include daughter, Penny Strite and her husband, Darrel, of Sharpsburg; daughter, Pamela Singhas and her husband, Kenneth, of Williamsport, Md.; son, Garvin Burgan Jr. and his wife, Deborah, of Sharpsburg; son, Richard Burgan, of Sharpsburg; sister, Ethel "Diddie" Miskell, of Sharpsburg; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one grandson, Michael Barry; three sisters, Leoda Crampton, Mary Shaw and Alice Lohman; and three brothers, Charles Burgan, Richard Burgan and Everett Burgan.
There will be no viewing.
Graveside services will be held at Mountain View Cemetery, Sharpsburg on Monday, March 14, 2011, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Chester Martin officiating.
