A Chambersburg, Pa., man died Friday morning when his SUV ran off Interstate 81 north of Hagerstown Regional Airport, Maryland State Police said.

Christopher Alan Henson, 33, of Chambersburg, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a state police news release.

Before Henson's name was released later in the day, Trooper 1st Class D. Ward said at the scene that a green GMC Yukon with Pennsylvania tags was traveling south on I-81 at about 9:50 a.m. when it left the roadway and crashed into a clump of trees in the median.

"We don't know why (the driver) veered off the road," Ward said.

Henson's vehicle crossed the median and struck several small trees before it flipped on its side, the news release said. The roof of the vehicle then struck another tree.

The vehicle came to rest in the median, facing northbound.

Firefighters had to cut the roof off the SUV, Ward said.

Tire marks could be seen leading from southbound I-81 to the cluster of trees in the median.

Traffic in the northbound and southbound lanes of I-81 was snarled for more than an hour while rescue personnel worked at the accident site.

The Maugansville and Longmeadow fire departments, along with state police, responded to the crash.
