Security guard falls to his death from Potomac Towers

March 11, 2011

A security guard at Potomac Towers in Hagerstown jumped or fell to his death from the roof of the building at about 2 p.m. Friday, city authorities said.

Police wouldn't release the man's name Friday afternoon because the family had not been notified, and the matter still is under investigation, Hagerstown police Detective Sgt. Jim Hurd said.

Detective Tammy Jurado said police believe the man might have committed suicide. She said the incident occurred on the east side of the building.

The man had worked as a security guard at Potomac Towers for eight or nine years, said Ted Shankle, director of the Hagerstown Housing Authority.

"It's too early to say anything. We're not even sure what happened yet," Shankle said Friday afternoon. "He was a very nice guy."

Potomac Towers, on West Baltimore Street, is 13 stories tall and houses senior citizens.
