MLK scholarship dinner to be held March 20

The Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Committee is planning a fundraiser luncheon Sunday, March 20, at 3:30 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center, 131 North Ave. in Hagerstown.

Proceeds from the fundraiser go to scholarships in the community.

The event costs $25, and includes dinner.

Spring fling

Daughters of Elks Sharon Temple 160 will hold a spring fling Saturday, March 19, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Elks Lodge at 326 Jonathan St. in Hagerstown.

Tickets cost $10, which includes a meal and entertainment by DJ Rob.

Fried chicken wings dinner

Greater Campher Temple will hold a food sale Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bethel Gardens Community Center, 356 Henry Ave. in Hagerstown.

The menu includes fried chicken wings, green beans, potato salad, macaroni and cheese, cake and soda.

The meal costs $8. It will be eat in or carry out.

The Women of Ebenezer AME Church, at 40 W. Bethel St., will hold a spaghetti dinner Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m.  

The menu includes spaghetti, tossed salad, garlic bread and soda. The meal costs $8.

Fashion show

It's not too late to get tickets for the Spring Bling Fashion Show presented by the For Our Kids' Sake program at Elks Lodge 278, 326 Jonathan St., tonight at 9 p.m.

Cookie day

Girl Scout Troop 47888 would like to send an apology for not selling cookies at the City Farmers Market on March 5. There was a misunderstanding regarding the date; another Girl Scout troop was also selling cookies and both troops apologize.  

The cookie managers, Monique Broadus and Paula Burnett, want to thank those who came out to support the troop and look forward to seeing them Saturday at Valley Mall in front of the JCPenney store from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and in front of Old Navy near the Food Court from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Cookies cost $4 a box.

Cookie sales will conclude Saturday, March 19, when the troop will sell cookies at Lowe's on Shank Farm Way in the North End from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Usher day program

The Second Christian Church, 65 W. North Ave. will hold an Usher's Day program Sunday, March 20, at 3:30 pm. The guest speaker will be the Rev. Imogene Smith, of Lighthouse Outreach Ministries in Martinsburg, W.Va. She will be accompanied by her choir and congregation.

All churches and ushers are invited.


The Greater Campher Temple/King's Apostle Church World Ministries, 125 Bethel St., will celebrate the fifth annual pastoral anniversary of Presiding Elder Darin and Elect Lady Helen Mency, beginning Sunday, April 10, at 11 a.m. and again at 4 p.m.

 Dinner will be served between services.

 The celebration will continue Friday, April 15, at 7 p.m. with a community appreciation service.

On Saturday, April 16, at 3 p.m.  an anniversary banquet will be held at the Ramada Plaza, 1718 Underpass Way.  

The banquet costs $40 for adults and $18 for those younger than 12.  RSVP by  March 26.

The conclusion of the anniversary will be Sunday, April 17, with an 11 a.m. service.

All services will be held at Greater Campher Temple.

We are the champions

On Feb. 26, Aaron Brooks won his third Maryland Junior League wrestling championship and Isaiah Brooks won his second.

Aaron competed in the 10 and younger division and Isaiah in the 12 and younger division.

The event was held at Smithsburg High School and Smithsburg Middle School gyms.

Both boys will travel to Chicago to compete in the national championships on April 9 and 10.
