COLLEGE BASEBALL
COCOA, Fla. — Greencastle-Antrim graduate Cole Sellers threw his second consecutive no-hitter — just missing a second straight perfect game — as Hagerstown Community College swept a pair of games at the Cocoa Expo on Wednesday.
Sellers, who threw a perfect game Saturday against the French Nationals in HCC’s first game in Cocoa, was just as dominant Wednesday in shutting down Penn State-Wilkes Barre, 17-0.
Sellers (2-0) struck out eight and walked none. Only two throwing errors by his defense kept him from a second straight perfect game.
“He has a great live arm, very smooth, great mechanics and throws with very little effort. That’s what you like to see,” said HCC coach Scott Jennings. “He has good velocity and he knows what he’s doing on the mound.”
Sellers didn’t suffer for support, either. The Hawks rapped out 19 hits in the game, led by Danny Morris, who had four hits — three of which were triples.
Jordan Thurber and Tyler Walsh each had three hits, while Seth Poffenberger, Chris Kulik, Rashad Talley and Justin Martinez each had two for the Hawks. Kulik and Morris each drove in three runs, while Walsh and Talley drove in two apiece.
Morris and Thurber each had four hits in the Hawks’ first game Wednesday, a 13-7 win over Lafleche. Poffenberger and Lazaro Torres each had three hits. Poffenberger had three RBIs and Thurber drove in two runs.
The Hawks (9-3) had 35 hits on the day and scored in 12 of the 13 innings in which they batted.
“We really hit the ball well all day and ran the bases well,” Jennings said. “A lot of doubles and triples today ... it was a very good performance.”
