Mail Call - March 9

"I would like to comment on the possible tax increase in Greencastle. How is it possible for our school board to spend everyone else's money for a very expensive improvement to the football stadium? Let's focus on the education of the children, especially those who get left behind. We never hear about these children, only the ones who do well."

— Greencastle, Pa.

"I'm not a big NASCAR fan. I'll tune in some of the bigger races, like the Daytona 500 and Talledega and those things. To tell you the truth, I don't even know a big race from a little race. But my question is to the NASCAR fans. Explain to me why Dale Earnhart Jr. is the popular driver on the circuit there. I just don't get that. It seems like a nice enough guy, but like I say, I'm not a big fan, but I can't tell you the last time, if at all, he's won a race. Yet he continues to be the No. 1 guy."

— Hagerstown

"To the caller from Funkstown: I was the lady in Falling Waters wondering if any students were in Afghanistan with the soldier. Now, this was not meant as any disrespect for the soldier — who, by the way, is a woman, not a man, as you stated, Eagle Eye. This was a wry commentary on the ... phraseology. The headline specifically stated that she was sharing stories of serving in Afghanistan. Now read that very carefully. This was a tongue-in-cheek observation of very bad headline phraseology. And I don't know how you knew that I was a lady. I guess you work for the paper."

— Falling Waters, W.Va.

"Cut this, cut that. Why isn't anyone talking about cutting welfare payments?"

— Halfway

"Thank you for putting that article in the paper on the 23rd about the excise tax, about reducing it to get more developers to build homes. Just like to know, did the 'Gods and Generals' ever repay the county, and did the developer for building that road at Westfields down there ever pay the county for that road? Twenty-three months of housing available nationwide, and we're worried about more development? No, no, no."

— Leitersburg

"With the hundreds of billions of tax dollars spent on education in this country over the last few years, every school should be a palace, with solid gold desks and personal tutors, with laptops for every student. But all we ever hear about are underpaid teachers and plummeting test scores. Maybe we should find out where all our tax money goes, and then find capable people to manage it properly."

— Hagerstown

"Why is the city no longer offering season passes at the municipal golf course? No reasons have been given on how the decision was arrived at, and by whose authority it has been kept from the public. They're still offering passes to the Potterfield pool, and special monthly rates for the parking deck. The coupon packet that's being offered in lieu of the season pass is no bargain. It seems like they're sticking it to the senior golfers once again, who are already on a fixed income."
