Helen Feaster Calhoun died Sunday, March 6 at Coffman Nursing Home in Hagerstown. Prior to her illness, she had resided for many years in Laurel and Wheaton, Md.

Born Feb. 14, 1921, in West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Clyde V. and Sarah Burgess Feaster. She was raised in Romney, W.Va., and attended Potomac State College in Keyser W.Va.

She married William Harper Calhoun during the World War II years. He died in 1958, and she raised their three children with much help from her extended family.

She returned to work in 1958 in a clerical position at the Veterans Administration in Washington, D.C. In 1963, she transferred to the Naval Ordnance Laboratory in White Oak, Md., where she was department secretary in the Public Works Department. She remained in that position until retiring from federal service in January 1992.

She is survived by her three children, Dee Forrester and husband, Ron, of Middletown, Md., Steve Calhoun and wife, Cindy, of Raleigh, N.C., and Sara Calhoun of Laurel, Md. She was grandmother to Christine Fernandes of Madeira Beach, Fla., William Calhoun of Raleigh, Brian Forrester of Middletown, Md., and Lisa Forrester Hager and husband, Dustin, of Elsmere, Ky. Her great-granddaughters are Zoe Willis of Madeira Beach  and Sadie Hager of Elsmere. Additionally, she is survived by a niece and three nephews and their families, including Patricia McClaren, Richard P. Calhoun, Michael A. Calhoun and Kevin Phillips.

A private service will be held at the Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, Hagerstown, Md., at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 10, 2011. The Rev. Don Forrester of Mountain Lake Park, Md., will officiate the service. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park in Rockville, Md.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Maryland Chapter, Western Maryland Region, 108 Byte Drive, Suite 103, Frederick, MD 21702.
