MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — — A 26-year-old man killed Sunday morning in a shooting at an apartment complex south of Martinsburg died from a single gunshot wound to the head, Berkeley County Sheriff’s Deputy Gary Harmison said Monday.

The man’s death was ruled a homicide, Harmison said. An autopsy was conducted Monday in Morgantown, W.Va., but police were still trying to contact the Hispanic man’s family and did not release his name.

Harmison said he did not know where the victim had been residing or whether he was a legal resident of the United States.

Investigators searched a residence in Winchester, Va., as part of the investigation, but Harmison declined to say Monday what evidence might have been found there.

The victim was found on a set of steps at Suncrest Apartments at 2998 Winchester Ave. at about 6:25 a.m. Sunday, police said.

“We think (the shooting) happened shortly before he was found, but we don’t know how long,” Harmison said.

Deputies responded to the scene after a resident of the apartment complex noticed the victim lying outside the residence, Harmison said.

Suncrest Apartments is across from the ROCS station in the Pikeside area.

The victim had severe head trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Harmison said Monday that investigators believe the victim might have been visiting someone at the apartment complex.
