BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. — A pavilion at North Berkeley Community Park on Williams Street collapsed during last week's high winds, Morgan County Commission president Stacy A. Dugan said Thursday.

"Thank God no one was inside," Dugan said during a Morgan County Commission meeting.

The pavilion materials were donated last year by the Morgan County Rotary Club, and the structure was built by Morgan County Parks and Recreation volunteers. The park is maintained by Morgan County Parks and Recreation.

Bruce Beadenkopf, acting parks and recreation director, said Thursday the estimated cost to replace the pavilion is about $7,000.

Dugan, who resigned from the parks and recreation board late last year, sought assurance from Beadenkopf that money raised for new playground equipment would not be used to repair the pavilion.

"The money was earmarked for playground equipment. I would caution you not to use that fundraiser," Dugan said.

Beadenkopf said only a portion of that money will be used, and a $5,000 grant might have to be used to repair the pavilion.

Beadenkopf said he is meeting with a claims adjuster next week, and that some of the undamaged pavilion materials might be able to be reused, which would reduce the estimated repair cost.
