HAGERSTOWN — Traveling the road to the Little League World Series in South Williamsport, Pa., this summer will require a detour through Hagerstown.

Maugansville Little League will serve as the host site for the 2011 Maryland State Tournament, which was announced on Tuesday by District 1 Little League administrator Larry Hammond. The tournament will be played July 23-29.

The state champion will advance to the Eastern Regional in Bristol, Conn., to vie for a berth in the World Series in South Williamsport.

“All eyes will be on Western Maryland this year,” said Hammond. “It’s always a big thing being the host. The winner goes on to the region for a chance to go to the World Series.”

Maugansville will host eight district champions in the double-elimination event. The tournament will require plenty of volunteer help.

“That is one of the reasons Maugansville was selected,” said Hammond. “They always have people come out and help. It takes a ton of volunteers for concessions, cleanup, field maintenance, team hosts, crowd control and anything else.”

Anyone interested in volunteering can contact Maugansville Little League president Kelly Colbert at 301-992-4904.

Halfway represented District 1 in Salisbury in the 2010 state tournament.

Conococheague was the last District 1 league to host the state tournament in 2004.
