Mail Call - March 2

March 01, 2011

"The federal government's running trillion-dollar deficits, and right there on the front page is an excellent example ... of how we got in this mess. The BayRunner Shuttle and Cape Air commuter, taxpayer-subsidized rides for people who, if they could afford to fly, ride that tax-dollar-gobbling boondoggle, Amtrak, should certainly be able to pay for their own trips to BWI in Baltimore. I'm outraged that my tax dollars go to pay for such unnecessary, wasteful spending. Anyone agree?"

— Frederick, Md.

"The caller's right. The Democrats gave us Social Security, Medicare, and health care. The key word is 'gave,' not 'paid for.' Our grandchildren and great-grandchildren will be paying for these monstrosities for years. It's about time the Democrats begin paying for all the debt that they give us."

— Hagerstown

"I read in the paper where Hancock schools got a hundred-and-some computers for the students. I just called a local restaurant in Hagerstown to find out how much a gallon of cole slaw was. It took four people in the restaurant to figure out that there was four quarts to a gallon. I think we need to throw the computers away and go back to teaching reading, writing and arithmetic."

— Hagerstown

"To the person who called in and said they couldn't get gap insurance, it was too expensive or whatever, and the Republicans wanted to see him or her die: No, that's not the case. The Democrats wrote the health bill. The Republicans had the input, but they didn't want to hear it. It only took this new election for them to put the Republicans in Congress that they'd listen to anything they say, and that's only because they had to. ... So it's not the Republicans doing this. They want health care, but they want it reformed."

— Waynesboro, Pa.

"I witnessed an auto accident this week where the firemen cleaned up the broken glass and shoveled it, and just threw it right in the passenger seat of the vehicle. I know they carry brooms and shovels with them; don't they carry buckets that they could put the trash in, instead of dumping in someone's car? Or is this fire department policy?"

— Hagerstown

"I am so frustrated right now. I have been sitting here all morning long, having to make calls to different places and every time I get an answer, the thing that they tell me is go online to do this, go online to do that. Everything you've got to do is go online and do it. What about us people who don't have computers, and don't want them? How are we supposed to know how to get a hold of these people when they won't give us nothing but a computer address, and the library doesn't have the old address?"

— Falling Waters, W.Va.

"Serving healthy meals at the schools sounds reasonable, but it really won't solve long-term health problems. People know what is healthy and unhealthy food. Fast food is not cheap, but it is easy. There is time to fix quick, healthy meals at home for your family if you care. Buying good food at the grocery store is less expensive than eating fast food out. Adults and their children eat unhealthy food because they choose it, not because of a lack of education. The obese treat food as their drug. It is a choice. They make the decision."

— Hagerstown

"I would like to tell everyone that my ex-husband goes to court ... for failure to pay child support. He's been in and out of court for the last two years, about once every three months. He has not paid child support in six months, and now owes $8,239 in arrears. Washington County judges, could you please see that something is done soon? I am tired of having to rob from every other bill to be able to pay for one bill, and I don't get anything from the state. Please do your job and put this fool in jail."

— Keedysville

"This is about the firemen who saved those cats from that burning building, and the families. I just want to say thank you. I'm an animal lover, too."

— Hagerstown

"Let me start out by saying I've been a Republican for 40 years, and I can't take it anymore. I am switching to Democrat, because the powers that be in the Republican Party are embarrassing themselves. They keep saying that President Obama's not an American citizen. Please let that die. That's insanity. Don't you think he was vetted? Don't you think John McCain and ... brought this up when they were running against him? Let it die. I saw a poll where 51 percent of Republican voters think he's not American. That's sad, and embarrassing to our party."

— Hagerstown

"The Waynesboro teachers union doesn't care if the BOE is broke or not. They want a pay raise, and the heck with the rest of the world. You can do away with sports and the music department, but we want our pay raise."

— Waynesboro, Pa.

"Here is what they put on the table as cuts. Take from the middle class, take from the disabled, take from the ones that live in poverty. That's how they want to pay off the debts. But Wall Street gets a bailout, gives themselves raises and a big party on bailout money. When are we going to do what Cairo, Egypt did?"

— Clear Spring

"Hagerstown caller, you claim Democrats 'gave us' Social Security, Medicare and health care. What wonderful gifts from those kind, caring, compassionate Democrats, that, of course, he's never had to pay for — ha. Politicians can give nothing that they don't first take from someone else. My parents paid into Social Security their entire working lives and never got back even a penny, because they both died before reaching retirement age. Thanks so much. Some present."

— Frederick, Md.

"I just don't know what all the fuss is about the no-kill animal shelters. We've got them throughout the state. It's called the Maryland state prison system."

— Hagerstown

"I get so tired of hearing about the recession is over with. Maybe business is picking up now, but it's because of the refund checks from the IRS. Just wait until all these are over with. We'll see. The president and the government never had a recession to begin with."

— Hagerstown

"This is on a Mail Call response, cruelty to animals. I can't understand. Here's a judge, person in here in from Washington County says judge slapped a man on the wrist for killing a cat with a BB gun. So he got out of that, but then a man about a year or so ago, he shot a dog that was going across his own ground, chasing a deer, and this man shot the dog, and his life was put in miserable conditions. I can't understand that. I mean, if a person owns a dog, the dog should be on his own ground."

— Hagerstown

"This concerns Tuesday, Feb. 15 in Mail Call. Somebody wrote in about he was driving in the snow to go get his beer and cigarettes, and this guy had his historical tags on. You all, keep it coming. I just love it. They went in, the guy paid for his stuff with food stamps, but the other guy from Edgemont — awesome. Come on, keep it coming. I love to laugh."

— Clear Spring

"Saw the article about the 911 place. What's up with the 911 place anyway? You make a call, and a call taker quizzes you about all sorts of things that have nothing to do with what you're seeing, and meanwhile a bunch of kids are burglarizing a house from stem to stern. Having to pick which department you need and giving all that information to somebody who isn't a dispatcher is just like the old system. There's no improvement there. It's ridiculous."
