Mail call - Feb. 25

February 24, 2011

"The article in the Thursday, Feb. 10 newspaper indicated that County Commissioner John Barr stated that population growth in Washington County is inevitable. With proper rules in place, it does not have to be inevitable. To project Mr. Barr's comment, at some point in the future Washington County will be wall-to-wall with housing and people. As a citizen, I find this position repulsive. For example, a limit could be put on the maximum number of housing units allowed in the county. Let's stop 'inevitable growth.'"

— Washington County

"I have a question for Washington County and also the city of Hagerstown. Why, in these places — I'm talking about homes; apartments, whatever you want to call them — that are subsidized by the taxpayers, why are there people living in there that aren't supposed to be living in there? There might be one or two people living there, and then all of their friends move in with them. And these people are being subsidized with my tax money and yours, too. ... Get those people out of there."

— Hagerstown

"Looks like the city of Hagerstown has done it to us again. Got my light bill yesterday, and it has nearly doubled or more, and this is ridiculous. Being on a fixed income and only allowing so much per month for bills, and the light bill doubled? Where do they think I'm going to come up with that money? How do others feel about this out there?"

— Hagerstown

"As President Obama says, we'll show you the money. Yeah, it's the money we're borrowing from China."

— Sharpsburg

"I can't believe the county commissioners wasted 10,000 tax dollars to make a video, to show how they wasted last year's taxes."

— Pondsville

"Why is it that I live within the city limits of Hagerstown, I pay city and county tax, I cannot have city light? I have to have Allegheny Light, which we all know is so much more expensive. The only thing that I get out of it is you pick my trash up. Well, for $100 a year, I'll haul my trash to the dump, and you stop all this tax on us. I would like somebody to answer the reason why I am not allowed to have city lights. Would somebody please answer that question for me?"

— Hagerstown

"I'd like to know if there's still a plan to build a shopping center and a Walmart store on Sharpsburg Pike, behind the Cracker Barrel."

— Hagerstown

"I was wondering if anybody can tell me why state police cars come without speedometers and turn signals."

— Hagerstown

"I haven't read anything about Congress getting a raise this year. I was wondering. I have heard that the pay raise is automatic."

— Williamsport
