Retired Col. Robert Gerdes Smith, 95, of Hagerstown, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011, at his residence.

Born July 21, 1915, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., he was the son of the late Ralph R. and Edna (Gerdes) Smith.

Robert was Presbyterian by faith.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree from Cornell University and went on to work as a county 4-H agent in New York. During World War II, Robert served in the U.S. Army as an aide to General Muir and participated in the Carolina Maneuvers. He also served in post World War II Germany and eventually retired as a Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves.

Robert also retired from BBD&O as an advertising executive and was a self-employed entrepreneur. He had been a member Duquesne Club in Pittsburgh, Pa.

His wife, Esther M. S. Smith, preceded him in death March 3, 2008.

He is survived by two daughters, Cheryl S. Strong and husband, Charles P., of Hagerstown, and Barbara S. Westfall and husband, Michael D., of Frisco, Texas; grandchildren, Gregory R. Westfall and his wife Danielle and daughters, Lily, Lauren and Alice, of Manhasset, N.Y., Capt. J. Matthew Westfall and wife, JoDee, of Jacksonville, N.C., Catherine T. Strong of Towson, Md. and Carey E. Strong of Hagerstown; one niece, Patricia Smalley of Staatsburg, N.Y.; and one nephew, E. Dennison Smith and wife, Barbara, of Pleasant Valley, N.Y.

Robert was also preceded in death by a brother, Ralph R. Smith Jr.

Friends will be received at the home of his daughter Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011, from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m.

A graveside ceremony with military honors will take place in Hyde Park, N.Y., at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Robert's name to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.
