Howard Eugene "Gene" Garrett, 70, of 13030 Little Hayden Circle, Hagerstown, Md., passed away Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, at the Golden Living Nursing Home, Hagerstown.

Born Thursday, Nov. 14, 1940, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Howard Jeffries Garrett and the late Annie Virginia Glaggett Garrett.

He was a 1960 graduate of Montgomery College, 1962 graduate of American University with a Bachelor of Arts degree and received his Master of Music degree in 1965 from West Virginia University.

Gene was a instrumental music teacher in the Washington County Public School System, retiring in 1993 after 30 years of service.

He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Kensington, Md., the Montgomery County Youth Orchestra, Montgomery Symphony Orchestra and the Music Educators National Conference.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Anne Elaine Garrett.

Services will be held Friday, Feb. 25, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 10401 Armory Lane, Kensington, Md., with the Rev. Adam B. Snell officiating.

Family will receive friends at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24.

Interment will be at the Parklawn Memorial Garden, Rockville, Md.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Assn.
