SMITHSBURG, Md. — Derward Eugene Davis, 81, of 22517 Leitersburg-Smithsburg Road, Smithsburg, Md., passed away Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, at the Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown.

Born Sunday, March 3, 1929, in Richmond, W.Va., he was the son of the late Lester Davis and the late Merle Perkins Davis.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17, where he served with the Seabee's during World War II. In 1950 he joined the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War, where he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

He also was a veteran of the Vietnam War, where he served as a command sergeant major in the military police. Following his retirement from the armed services, he was employed at Grove Mfg., Shady Grove, Pa., from 1973 to 1985.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Eve Hamrick Davis; two daughters, Vickie L. Davis of Sharpsburg, Md., and Pam D. Hebb of Waynesboro, Pa.; two sons, Dave E. Davis of Hagerstown, Md., and Terry L. Davis of Highland Park, N.J.; 12 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Kay Neal; sisters, Mabel Malinich and Virginia Holbrook, and one great-grandchild.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011, at 11 a.m. at the Rose Hill Cemetery, 600 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Mark A. Hosler officiating.
