'Cats, Rebels, Leopards get No. 1 hoops seeds

Williamsport’s boys, South Hagerstown’s boys and Smithsburg’s girls have earned No. 1 seeds in their regions or sections as the MPSSAA announced the boys and girls basketball playoff draws Sunday.

Williamsport’s boys (19-3) are the top seed in the Maryland Class 1A West East Sectional and have a bye into the sectional semifinals. The Wildcats will host the Oakdale-Manchester Valley winner on Feb. 28.

In 1A West East Sectional boys quarterfinal games Friday, No. 6-seed Smithsburg (11-11) will travel to No. 3-seed Catoctin and No. 7-seed Boonsboro (4-18) will travel to No. 2-seed Brunswick.

In a 1A West West Sectional boys quarterfinal Friday, No. 5-seed Clear Spring (9-12) will travel to face rival Hancock (8-13), the No. 4 seed.

North Hagerstown’s boys (14-5) drew a first-round bye as the No. 3 seed in Class 2A West. The Hubs will host a quarterfinal game against the Middletown-Walkersville winner on Feb. 28.

South Hagerstown’s boys (17-3) are the top seed in Class 3A West. The Rebels will host the Northwood-Clarksburg winner on Feb. 28.

Smithsburg’s girls (20-1) are the top seed in the Class 1A West East Sectional. In a sectional semifinal on March 1, the Leopards will host the winner of Saturday’s quarterfinal game between host Williamsport (6-15), the No. 4 seed, and No. 5-seed Manchester Valley.

No. 3-seed Boonsboro (10-12) will host No. 6-seed Catoctin (15-7) in another 1A West East Sectional quarterfinal game Saturday.

In the 1A West West Sectional girls quarterfinals, No. 6-seed Southern Garrett will travel to No. 3-seed Hancock (7-13) on Friday — the Panthers will be hosting a doubleheader along with the boys game — and No. 7-seed Clear Spring (3-18) will travel to No. 2-seed Northern Garrett.

In Class 2A West girls first-round action Saturday, No. 11-seed North Hagerstown (12-6) will travel to No. 6-seed Francis Scott Key.

In Class 3A West girls first-round action Saturday, No. 9-seed Tuscarora will travel to No. 8-seed South Hagerstown (4-15).

The dates listed for playoff matchups are the ones outlined in the MPSSAA’s winter sports bulletin. They are subject to change.
